The Trotec laser cutter is located in Olsen Hall 306.

Following is a commercial video by Trotec Laser, showing a machine in action. Ours is a smaller version of the one in the video.


Students: You must attend an in-person tutorial session before you are allowed to use the laser. Also, you should prototype your design in cardboard (on the laser) before cutting it in acrylic. You will only get one 12" x 24" sheet of acrylic; if you make a mistake and waste it, you'll have to buy more yourself. Also—you are responsible for bringing your own scrap cardboard to the lab.

To transfer your drawing from Inkscape to CorelDraw:

• When working in Inkscape, make sure to choose an empty fill for polygons.
• In Inkscape, save your drawing as an AI (Adobe Illustrator file).
• In CorelDraw, open the AI file by choosing "All File Formats" or "AI Adobe Illustrator" in the file-open dialog.
• Do a select-all on your objects, right-click and choose Properties, then set the Outline color to RGB Red=255, Green=0, Blue=0, and the Width to 0.004 pixels. Then click Apply All. This will make your strokes identifiable as such to the Trotec print driver.
• After adjusting the page size per the explanation in the link above, print your file to the Trotec software.
